Description
This Imperial Glass 418-12 Lead Lustre vase in satin Blue with 4 Opal Festoons would have been made ca. 1925. This is the finest piece of Lead Luster we have had and we think that it is better than some of the more highly thought of Free Hand wares. In our opinion, it is that good.Lead Lustre glass was introduced after Imperial stopped making the Free Hand line of art glass which was more expensive to produce because it was hand blown without use of a mould by highly paid craftsmen originally from Europe. Lead Lustre was blown into moulds, however paste moulds were used so that the glass would show no signs of a mould seam. A paste mould is a regular cast iron mould that is lined with a wetted cork or pasted sawdust material. When the glass is blown into the mould there is a steam envelope created between the glass and the wet material. This allows the glass to be rotated while it is blown resulting in a piece that has no mould lines or seams, just like free hand wares. It would then be struck up for final shaping and decorating.
The vase stands 11-3/8" (28.9 cm) tall and measures 3-1/4" (8.3 cm) in diameter at the mouth. The base is also approximately 3-1/4" across. The piece is in excellent condition without chips, flea bites, or staining. It does show two small spots of debris in the glass as was common in glass of the time. They are visible in the photos with magnification.
This same vase in form and décor sold at auction (Matthew Wroda 1-2-2021 Lot 5) for 3 including BP.
The first four photos are of the vase as it was rotated.
