His Beloved Aunt Polly_Archaeology Shipwreck 1932_Gillette Castle-East Haddam CT
This booklet is an historical perspective of the actor William Hooker Gillette and his beloved houseboat.
The “Aunt Polly” was built in South Brooklyn in 1899, a steam yacht approximately 100 feet long, 90 feet at the water line, with five feet of draught, by builder F. W. Ofeldt & Sons.  It was owned by actor William Hooker Gillette whose fame and fortune grew with his portrayal on stage of Sherlock Holmes.  Actor Gillette later had the Aunt Polly lengthened to about 140 feet. He also purchased and renovated what was to become "Gillette’s Castle” in East Haddam, CT. where the “Aunt Polly” was permanently moored when it burned in 1932.
