    Description

This is a "El Camino Real" (The Kings Highway) Mission Bell and Guide Post Marker souvenir. These souvenirs were made in 1914 and sold in several of the gift shops of the California missions. The bell really has a good sound when rung.
    It stands 9 1/8" tall.
It is in very good condition.
The brass has a very nice patina.
It has minor wear and signs of handling.
The bell is marked "1769-1905" and is indicative of one of the very first of these souvenirs to be produced.
Later versions have the bell marked 1906 and later years.
The bell is also marked "El Camino Real".
The sign on the post is marked "El Camino Real
San Diego Los Angeles San Francisco".
The outer edge of the base is marked "El Camino Real
    The Kings Highway
    Mission Bell
    Guide Post Marker".
Inside the base it is marked "1914
Forbes". The early Spanish settlers named the road from San Diego to San Francisco "El Camino Real" for the King of Spain.
The 700 mile historic road is also known as the California Mission Trail that connects 21 missions, 4 presidios (military forts) and several pueblos (towns) from Mission San Diego de Alcala in the south to Mission San Francisco Solano in Northern California.
The El Camino Real is designated as California Historical Landmark #784.
