    Description

This is a hand made bat house. I've been studying birds and building bird houses, owl houses, woodpecker houses, robin houses, since 1997.
This isn't a commercial product. It's a one off hand made product. It is made from Cedar and Fir. All of the wood is very old, aged wood that has been stored in a barn for decades. The front and back are Cedar. The side support mounting pillars are strong Fir.
The wire mesh is galvanized steel, with 1/8" squares, and it's spaced slightly away from the wood, just enough for the bats to climb. The bottom exposed mesh is a staging area for bats to be able to climb down and cool off, if the interior is too hot. The bats will climb lower in the bat house to cool off. The staging area also allows them to land easier and take off into flight easier.
The bat's like to drop, using gravity to accelerate, in order to take flight. So mounting the house at least 8 feet off the ground, allows them to drop and glide away from the house. The bat house should be positioned in the morning sun, not afternoon sun, this assures that the house never gets too cold, and they don't get too hot in the roasting afternoon sun. Although in warm climates, it should be placed in a cooler location.
This house is treated with pure food grade Jojoba Oil, hand rubbed. You can apply your own wood stain or oil over the top of the oil if necessary. Bats are sensitive to chemicals, so you may want to use a food safe oil, only on the exterior.
The interior space is 5/8" gap. This is a gap that is used by all types of bats, including little brown bats, and some exotic bats.
Bats live together, and don't mind sharing the same space, so you may have 1 or 2 bats, or if you live by water you might get 20 bats inside this bat house. It is 9" wide and 2" deep, with a 12" wide roof, and the longest side is 21" long.
The roof has some oily blotches on it. This is old, aged wood, with some natural discoloration in some spots. The front wood and side wood doesn't have discoloration or any blotches, but the wood has a small amount of nicks and natural wear from storage. The wood is sanded and all edges are smooth, with some nicks and scratches remaining.
It's a very beautiful house, and would be beautiful next to a pool or out on a deck or on a barn, or on your favorite large tree or outbuilding, pump house, or next to water and mosquitoes.
Includes 4 water proof 3" wood screws for mounting.
