Description

Antique Victorian Renaissance Revival or Holbeinesque set parure earrings, brooch, pendants. 15ct gold, garnets and chrysoberyl. Made in England, circa 1860 - 80.
Measurements: Weight is 23.8 grams. Length of brooch / pendants is a little over 2 1/4 inches (6 inches). Earrings, not including the wires are a little over 1 inch (3cm) in length.
Description : A versatile and very impressive demi parure or jewelry set. Consists of a brooch, which doubles as a pendant with a drop that can be removed and also worn seperately as a pendant. In addition, a matching pair of earrings. During the late 19th century, the English were enamored with the jewelry designed by Hans Holbein and made jewelry in that style - Renaissance Revival or Holbeinesque.
Brooch is an arching composition composed of scrolling ribbons on top with a scrolling foliage shaped drop with raised sides. The earrings are the same shape as the latter. All parts are set with incredible rich red, glowing garnets, most of a luscious cusion shape. The exception is the tear-shaped drop. Garnets are highlighted by very pale yellow / transparent chrysoberyl, with the appearance of diamonds. Surfaces have a slightly stippled, texture. Gold globular beads add richness around the central diamond of the brooch. Gems are wonderfully cut. Their deep red color glows and gleams with mystery and appeal and imparts a particularly luxuious look to this set.
Impessive, understated elegance. Extremely versatile and wearable. Wires of earrings are probably replacements. Simple c-clasp to pin. It appears that the brooch was convertible to another jewel, based on the removable center at the back.
Marks and Metal: There are no marks on the gold, as is to be expected of jewelry of this period. We acid tested the gold, which stays clearly for 14k and since the Uk used 15k, that is the standard.
Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
