Description
This is a tourist booklet from 1915 called “Picturesque Seattle and Puget Sound.” It was issued by the publicity and industrial bureau of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce. Not counting the covers, it has 64 pages. Most pages have a captioned full sized black and white photograph except a map page, the reverse of the covers and one other page. The reverse of the front cover has Some Seattle Facts and the reverse of the back cover has Seattle Statistics for 1914. The page opposite the back cover has a bullseye type illustration of the temperature for each month of the year.Closed, the staple-bound booklet measures about 6 inches wide and 9 inches high. The covers are a thin cardstock and inside pages are printed on a somewhat glossy type paper. The front and back covers show the same colored photograph scene of Madison Street. It appears that the colors in the cover photograph may have been hand colored as was done in that era.
The foreground of the cover photograph shows several women in all their finery and in front of them, on the sidewalk, are three Native Americans sitting on a blanket on the sidewalk with basketry for display or sale. One inside page discusses the Native Americans (see photo). Black-and-white photos in the book show various landmarks, buildings, landscapes or activities; some other nearby areas; and one birds-eye map from 1908.
Condition Details
: The booklet is in acceptable condition but show signs of age, handling and usage. The covers and inside pages have yellowed and likely faded from age. The covers have some rips and creases, as do some of the inside pages (with half of them having a couple small 1/2-inch rips on bottom edge). Some pages have stray marks, offset marks, slight soiling, small foxing or staining. The staples are fully intact but rusted. The back cover has some light penciled handwriting on the top right corner (see photo).
